Total Climbing for Super Bowl 54

49ers vs. Chiefs, 1/21/20 Total for Super Bowl Continues to Climb

While football fans are still over a week-and-a-half away from Super Bowl 54, oddsmakers are busy adjusting the over/under for the 49ers and Chiefs matchup in Miami. What is the total now at most sports books?

Our NFL Football Odds & Betting Lines page lists spreads and totals from five different online sports books so bettors can get a sense of the market at all times. While most sports books list the total for Super Bowl 54 at 54, Sportsbook.com has the number at 54.5 while My Bookie has the total all the way up to 55 with the juice shaded towards the over at -115.

Sports books must be getting hammered with bettors taking the over, especially after the Chiefs cashed back-to-back over tickets for bettors in both the Divisional round of the playoffs, as well as the AFC Championship Game. While the Niners held the Vikings to just 10 points in their Divisional round meeting (and thus, hit the under), San Francisco’s 37-point outburst in a 37-20 win over Green Bay in last Sunday’s NFC title game helped cash the over of 46.5.

The over is 4-1-1 in the 49ers’ last six games overall, but the under is 4-1 in their last five playoff games. The over is also 8-3-1 in San Francisco’s last 12 games after allowing more than 250 yards passing in its previous contest and is 4-0 in the team’s last four games after accumulating more than 150 yards rushing in its precious contest.

On the other side, the over is 7-2 in the Chiefs’ last nine games when facing an opponent with a winning record and is 10-4 in their last 14 games after accumulating more than 350 total yards in their previous contest. The over is also 5-2-1 in Kansas City’s last eight games after allowing less than 90 yards rushing in its previous matchup.

Which side of the total has been cashing in recent Super Bowls? The Patriots’ 13-3 win over the Rams last year fell well under the total of 55.5. In fact, the score at halftime was 3-0 New England and neither team scored a touchdown until the Patriots finally reached pay dirt in the fourth quarter. That said, the Eagles and Patriots hit the over of 49 in the 2018 Super Bowl, while New England and Atlanta did the same when they went to overtime in the 2017 Super Bowl (that total was a whopping 57.5).
