Penguins edged at Islanders in OT
Pittsburgh lost 5-4 in overtime Tuesday night at New York to drop to 11-7-3 on the season. Bryan Rust gave the Penguins a 1-0 lead on the power play with 8:26 left in the first period on a goal assisted by Jake Guentzel and Evgeni Malkin. Brandon Tanev made it 2-0 later in the first with assists courtesy of John Marino and Jared McCann. The Islanders evened it at 2-2 in the second period before Pittsburgh took the lead back at the 5:29 mark on another Tanev goal assisted by Marcus Pettersson and Dominik Kahun. Guentzel pushed it to 4-2 2:39 into the third period on a power play goal assisted by Alex Galchenyuk and Malkin. The Islanders scored twice the rest of the period before winning it in the extra session. Matt Murray allowed five goals on 42 shots in the loss.
Nelson wins it in OT
Brock Nelson scored the game-winning goal 2:55 into overtime Tuesday night as New York won 5-4 at Pittsburgh. The Islanders trailed 2-0 until Anthony Beauvillier put them on the board with 17:21 to go in the second period on assists from Nick Leddy and Nelson. Nelson scored his first goal of the game three minutes later as Leddy and Derick Brassard drew assists. New York fell behind again 4-2 early in the third period before eventually cutting the deficit back to one goal on a Josh Bailey tally with 4:19 remaining off assists from Jordan Eberle and Devon Toews. Ryan Pulock tied it with 1:32 remaining with assists going to Brassard and Leddy. The Nelson winner in OT was assisted by Beauvillier. Semyon Varlamov gave up four goals on 31 shots in the winning effort.
NHL Betting Trends
The Penguins are 5-1 in their last six games played on one day of rest. Pittsburgh is 48-20 in its last 68 Thursday games.
The Islanders are 8-0 in their last eight games as a favorite. New York is 8-1 in its last nine home games.
The Penguins are struggling in the absence of their captain, Sidney Crosby, and I don't see it turning around tonight. New York is a disciplined team that is fantastic on the back end and usually scores just enough to get the job done. The Islanders are turning to Thomas Greiss in goal tonight and he comes in with a .938 save percentage. Good luck solving that. I'm taking the hosts here.
